Alicia Groeneweg

After completing my Bachelor's degree in Earth and Ocean Science at the University of Victoria (Canada) in 2013, I started working as a geologist for the Canadian oil and gas company Central European Petroleum Ltd. Over the following nine years, I gained extensive knowledge of deep subsurface geology, particularly in the North German Basin, while working in the oil and gas industry.

Since 2022, as part of my Master's degree in Energy Transition Systems and Technologies at the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) and in my new position at Fraunhofer IEG, I have been researching the use of the deep subsurface for the energy transition. In particular, I contribute my expertise and experience from the oil and gas industry. My focus is on the evaluation of geological data and the characterization of the deep subsurface for the use of geothermal potentials and deep waters for the extraction of heat and lithium as well as for the underground storage of CO2 and hydrogen.
