Although central to the green transition of road transport, the battery currently suffers from a supply chain that lacks traceability, sustainability, resiliency, and circularity. Implementing the digital battery passport (DBP) concept in the battery value chain could resolve these issues.
The European Digital Battery Passport (DBP) initiative stems from the EU REGULATION (EU) 2023/1542, also known as the EU Battery Regulation (“Regulation”). The main goal of the BASE project is to develop, validate, and implement a working DBP service, as mandated by this “Regulation.”
On the data management side, by exploiting distributed ledger technology (DLT), BASE will ensure built-in data authenticity verification along the value chain, with no data duplication, avoiding data manipulation, assuring privacy by design, and promoting data interoperability. The DBP will provide up-to-date and accurate data on battery performance indicators, remaining useful life, dismantling, material composition, and safety.
The applicability of the DBP will be demonstrated through four pilot use cases in the BASE Project:
- Automotive: E-bus EV platform production
- Automotive: Frugal EV platform production
- Marine: Electric tugboat production pilot
- Stationary: 2nd-life electric energy storage production
The 4 pilots aim to validate the Digital Battery Passport (DBP) functionality, against the 7 static (SDS) datasets.
Objective
- Develop a trusted and interoperable Digital Battery Passport (DBP) framework and platform
- Ensure value chain track and traceability throughout the Digital Battery Passport (DBP) lifecycle
- Employ advanced analytical and AI techniques to estimate battery performance and safety indicators.
- Develop circularity indicators by accounting 4R (Reduce, Repair, Reuse, and Recycle) aspects
- Develop harmonised Environmental, Social, Governance and Economic (ESGE) indicator
- Develop business model to promote circular economy in battery value chain exploiting Digital Battery Passport (DBP)
- Demonstrate and validate the Digital Battery Passport (DBP) concept
