DEEP-MTD® - Development of Enhanced Extension Possibilities for Micro Turbine Drilling

In this project, the Mauerstätten drilling will be used as a test environment for the further development of the novel BMWi-funded drilling technology "Micro Turbine Drilling - MTD". This method allows for cost-effective long,  small-diameter deflection drilling from an existing cased/uncased borehole into hard rock formations, thereby increasing permeability in cases of insufficient productivity and minimizing the risk of finding productive zones. This technology will create entirely new opportunities for geothermal resource development and has generated significant interest in the industry.

The Competence Center Micro Turbine

The Competence Center "Micro-drilling Technology" focuses on the development of the new drilling technology "Micro Turbine Drilling - MTD®".

Project

MTD® is a new drilling method that enables cost-effective deflection drilling of at least 50 meters, capable of penetrating hard rock formations at temperatures up to 200 °C from a cased borehole up to 5 km deep.
