Process Engineering

Industrial processes are currently undergoing a fundamental transformation: Fossil primary raw materials have to be replaced and sustainable energy sources have to be integrated at the same time.

In this context, the engineers of process technology at Fraunhofer IEG transfer scientific findings into practice. Their sphere of activity covers plant engineering from simple test stands to the integration of new material or thermodynamic processes in existing large-scale plants. They provide support from the initial idea through to implementation: in plant conception (basic engineering), plant design, component dimensioning (detail engineering), plant construction, commissioning or operational optimization.

As an interface between science and technology, the experts at Fraunhofer IEG classify new ideas, test and evaluate their technical and economic feasibility. They develop and operate precisely fitting test plants, model real plant components as well as complete plants as independent simulation programs and, for example, design control concepts of complex systems based on them.

Their industrial partners include manufacturers and developers of plant components as well as plant constructors and operators in the basic materials and chemical industries, but also in refrigeration and air-conditioning technology. The range of technologies worked on extends from the integration of thermodynamic storage and converters, such as salt storage, heat pumps or heat transformers in chemical or thermodynamic processes, through binary power plant processes, water desalination, separation and purification of gas mixtures, to the connection of district heating structures.
